Stromsburg Became a City in 1888 By
1888, the Village of Stromsburg had grown to number more than 1,000 people and
so on March 13, 1888, a petition, signed by 102 legal voters and taxpayers, was
presented to the village board asking that the town be made a second class city.
The board accepted the petition and appointed a committee to lay out two wards.
All property north of 4th Street was in the First Ward and all
property south of 4th Street was in the Second Ward.
Thus, the Village of Stromsburg became the City of Stromsburg. At the regular election held on April 2, 1888, the following officers were elected: Mayor – Lewis Headstrom, the founder of Stromsburg; Council – Alex Scott, O. Headstrom, A. L. Sprague, and J. G. Green; City Clerk – J. B. Dey; City Treasurer – R. E. McConaughy; and Police Judge – W. F. Leach.
