The Samuel J. Johnson Family

Samuel J. Johnson was born in Srinhult Ostergotland, Sweden, June 24, 1843.  He came to America with his parents in 1868.  They settled in Illinois.  He was married in 1870 to Christina Swenson and soon after that, he and his wife moved to Nebraska and settled on a farm 2 miles west and 2 miles north of Stromsburg.  They purchased the farm from the Union Pacific Railroad.

August and his wife Lydia (Swanson) were the parents of 3 sons, Roy A., Wallace E., and Morris C.  Lydia passed away while the boys were quite young.  After finishing their schooling, Roy and Wallace went to California to make their home.  Morris stayed on the farm with his father and they farmed together until August’s retirement in 1943.

Morris and his wife Marjorie rented the farm until 1956, at which time they purchased it, following the death of Morris’ father.  Their two daughters, Maureen and Linda, were the 4th generation of Johnsons to live on the farm.  The Morris C. Johnsons were recognized in 1971 as an Ak-Sar-Ben pioneer family.  The award is presented to families who have had members residing on the same farm for 100 years or more.
