Library News

by Diana Johnson

Members of the Stromsburg Public Library Book Club will celebrate the 10th anniversary of the group with a field trip to Red Cloud, home of author Willa Cather and the inspiration of many of her novels Thursday, September 18. Some sites included on the guided tour are the Cather childhood home; Grace Episcopal Church, which the Cather family attended; St. Juliana Falconieri Catholic Church where Antonia was married; the Miner house, home of Cather’s first playmate; the Burlington Depot; and the Farmer’s & Merchants Bank.

The Cather tour will replace the regular meeting of the Book Club, which is held at 7 p.m. the third Tuesday of each month. Anyone wishing to participate in the tour may join the carpool leaving the library at 11 a.m. for Red Cloud. Call the library at 764-7681 or email at stromsburgpl@alltel.net for more information.

You can also find information on the library website, www.stromsburglibrary.com, and click on services. The library website and the Book Club link are maintained by Mayor Grace Gerrard and we are grateful for the conscientious professionalism of her work. Book reviews of many Book Club selections may also be found there. Carolyn Nordberg, another outstanding library volunteer, has submitted most book reviews.

Congratulations go to McKenna Powell, daughter of Pat & Connie Powell, and Travis Eller, son of Bob & Jill Eller, for meeting the challenge of reading 1000 pages this summer. These young people received chamber bucks for the successful completion of their goals.
